The creation of the pilot program, the Washington Parking Benefit District (PBD), seeks to solve the congested parking situation along the busy thoroughfare.
"The Washington Corridor has the opportunity to become a signature entertainment and business destination in our city," said Council Member Ellen Cohen. "PBDs have been proven to give back to the community as well as increase business, and in order to sustain the viability and vitality of this unique area, it is critical that we balance the needs of residents, business owners, and patrons."
Council members say the meters will also offer a dedicated revenue source for neighborhood projects, which can include walkable sidewalks, improved lighting and better security.
