One of two men arrested while allegedly trying to smuggle weapons for one Mexican cartel around rivals in another is scheduled to appear in federal court.

Juan Ricardo Martinez Cardenas is scheduled for a detention hearing Friday in McAllen. He was arrested Monday in Roma during a police traffic stop. Inside the vehicle police found five assault rifles, a grenade launcher, four grenades, as well as ammunition.

Also arrested was Daniel Blanco Avila. According to court records, Blanco told investigators the seized weapons had been smuggled into South Texas from Mexico at Falcon Lake and were to then be smuggled back into Mexico for fighting elsewhere. The goal was to avoid rivals in the Gulf cartel.

Attorneys for both men didn't return calls from The Associated Press.
