It happened just before 11pm Sunday in the 12300 block of the South Sam Houston Parkway West service road.
Houston police said a 34-year-old man was driving a gray Nissan Maxima at a high rate of speed from the Southwest Freeway service road toward the South Sam Houston Parkway West service road.
According to investigators, the Nissan entered the Sam Houston Parkway service road and struck the left concrete retaining wall.
The driver died at the scene. His identity has not been released.
His passenger was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
