Teen passenger killed in single-vehicle crash

HOUSTON

It happened just before 6:30am in the 8500 block of Hillcroft at Beechnut.

Officials said a 2005 Nissan Altima was traveling at about 60mph when it slammed into a telephone pole.

Looking at the pole laying flat on the ground gives you an idea of how hard the impact was.

Police said a 19-year-old man was driving and an 18-year-old woman was in the passenger seat.

The driver suffered only minor injuries. The passenger was taken to an area hospital where she died.

Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seatbelt and airbags did not deploy, authorities said.

Witnesses saw the car in the middle of the road with the pole through the windshield.

"The pole was like this, and how could the car actually be like that?" nearby resident Christa Weissman asked.

"I saw somebody in the passenger side, basically slumped over, and that's when I was going into work this morning," Alesha Gibbs said.

Something happened to make the man swerve off the road into the pole. The driver reportedly told investigators he fell asleep at the wheel, but police cannot confirm that at this time. They are still looking into whether alcohol or drugs may have been a factor.

The victim's name was not released. Please stay with Eyewitness News and abc13.com for updates.
