No bond for South Texas official in smuggling case

DEL RIO, TX

A federal magistrate in Del Rio on Tuesday ruled Maverick County Commissioner Rodolfo "Rudy" Heredia and David Gelacio of Eagle Pass must remain in custody. A detention hearing has been scheduled Friday for Jose Luis Aguilar of Eagle Pass.

Federal prosecutors last week announced the trio's arrest on money laundering and cash smuggling charges.

Authorities have said the case involves a 2011 trip to Mexico and an alleged deal with a known Zeta drug cartel associate. An indictment says Heredia sold a pickup and had two associates smuggle the $13,000 paid to him back to the U.S.

If convicted the three defendants face up to 20 years in prison.
