Volunteers clean up neglected Acres Homes cemetery

HOUSTON

Weeds and overgrown grass have been covering grave markers at the Rest Lawn Cemetery in the Acres Homes area of northwest Houston.

On Saturday, two dozen neighbors pulled back the weeds, cleaned the markers and trimmed the grass and trees.

"All of us are from this community and we want to pay respect to the veterans, our peers and the families of the loved ones that are buried here in this cemetery," said Johnnie Tatum with Second Chance Outreach.

Volunteers say they plan to clean up the cemetery one quadrant at a time. They expect the project to take two months.

Once the entire cemetery is cleaned up, they will establish a regular schedule to maintain the area.
