State Supreme Court to hear pet-value appeal

FORT WORTH, TX

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports justices have accepted the appeal of an appeals court ruling that overturned a 120-year-old Texas Supreme Court precedent. The 2nd Texas Court of Appeals in Fort Worth ruled that owners can claim the sentimental value of their dead pets.

Kathryn and Jeremy Medlen sued a former Fort Worth animal shelter employee after their dog was mistakenly euthanized three years ago. A state district judge initially dismissed their sentimental value claim, but the appeals court reversed that decision.

Arguments are set for Jan. 10.
