An overnight shootout at a smoke shop ended with a clerk in the hospital and two gunmen on the loose.

The bullets started to fly at Puff's Smoke Shop on the East Freeway around 12:30am. Police say two gunmen in a silver Charger pulled up at the shop and started shooting. But the clerk returned fire.

The clerk's wife and two customers inside the store dodged the bullets, but the clerk was shot in the leg.

The robbers escaped without any money and it's not yet clear if they were also shot.

"The suspect shot at the clerk. The clerk shot back at the suspects," said Sgt John Hernandez with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "It's unknown if the suspects were injured. They fled the scene and have not been located."

Deputies are reviewing surveillance video of the incident. The clerk is at an area hospital. He's expected to recover from his injuries.
