The incident happened shortly before 8am Thursday in the 12700 block of Royal Shore Drive in a small rural subdivision in northeast Montgomery County. According to authorities, family members were watching a 16-month-old boy at his grandfather's home when at some point the child went missing.
They started searching for the child and found him in the water of a nearby lake. Investigators say the boy had been outside with his grandfather and while the grandfather was in the garage, he wandered across the street and down a slight embankment then fell into the water.
CPR was attempted by EMS crews, but it was too late.
The victim hasn't been identified. An investigation is underway, but deputies say criminal charges are not expected.
