Fight between teens over girl's sexual orientation ends with her brother shot in the back

HOUSTON

The shooting happened between two apartment complexes off Barberry at Scott around 9pm.

Police tell us an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old began fighting when the 15-year-old started shooting. Investigators say the teen fired the gun six times. The 18-year-old, later identified as Damon Dawayne Mayes, was hit once in the back.

Mayes' family told police that another youth made a derogatory comment about the sexual orientation of Mayes' sister and that Mayes and the other youth got into a fight. A third person, the 15-year-old suspect, pulled a pistal and began firing.

Neighbors say they are tired of the violence.

"I don't know why they carry the guns, but they do and they shouldn't because its just ongoing, ongoing keep on killing each other over and over and over," said neighbor Rochelle Harold. "It don't make sense."

Mayes was taken to the hospital, but we're told he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Police are still looking for the 15-year-old suspect, as well as four persons of interest.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to call the Houston Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
