Deputy constable struck by SUV driver

HOUSTON

According to Assistant Chief Randy Johnson, two Precinct 5 deputy constables were out of their vehicles conducting a traffic stop on the northbound side when a driver in a white Chevy Tahoe passed over four lanes of traffic and came at them.

One of the deputy constables was hit. The other was able to jump over the barrier and get out of the way.

The deputy constable who was struck was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with head injuries. We told he's alert.

"One deputy is still here on the scene. He's fine, the one that jumped over the wall," said Johnson. "The deputy that made the initial traffic stop is in stable condition at Hermann Hospital."

The driver of the SUV has been charged with intoxication assault of a peace officer.

The northbound lanes of the Beltway were shut down due to the police investigation, but all lanes were reopened just before 6am.
