Houston Fire Museum raising funds for new facility

HOUSTON

The museum organized a casino fundraiser and auction at Saint Arnold Brewing Co. on Sunday.

The museum's president, Tom McDonald, says the museum's main purpose is to teach fire safety to children.

That's a problem in the current location on Milam Street. It is housed in Houston's oldest still-standing fire station, built in 1898.

"We're limited in the amount of space [and] the number of school classes that can come," McDonald said. "We're typically limited to smaller groups and homeschoolers and church groups."

The new fire station will have hands-on exhibits for children and a greater emphasis on fire prevention and education, rather than just the history of Houston firefighting.
