Two drivers in reported stolen vehicles full of suspected illegal immigrants lead police on chase

HOUSTON

Matagorda County Sheriff's Office were notified by Jackson County Sheriff's Office just after 8am about a stolen vehicle described as a green Dodge pickup traveling on FM 616.

A deputy spotted the vehicle traveling east on 12th Street in Bay City. The deputy attempted to pull over the driver and gave chase. The deputy says he noticed there was a silver Ford F150 pickup traveling with the Dodge pickup. Deputies with the Matagorda Sheriff's Office, DPS units and Bay City Police Department units joined in the pursuit, which continued north on Highway 60.

The Ford pickup driver wrecked near Chalmers Road on Highway 60. According to investigtators, there were 16 people in that vehicle. At least four people were transported to the hospital. Ten people were taken into custody, but two others fled the scene.

Authorities kept pursuing the Dodge pickup into Wharton County, where it crashed just north of County Road 114. There were at least 12 people in that vehicle and investigators say they all fled the wreck and remain at large.

Both vehicles were reported stolen out of Harris County. Investigators believe all of the occupants in both pickup trucks are illegal immigrants.
