Want to take some courses at Rice? Well, now you can right from home and it won't cost you a dime.

Rice today announced it is offering five online courses by partnering with California-based Coursera, a platform that hosts content from several universities online.

For its pilot offering, you'll be able to take Rice courses in general chemistry, software programming, electrical engineering, analytical chemistry and nanotechnology.

The courses will be available at various times this coming school year and Rice may add more.

Other schools announced Tuesday as new providers to Coursera were California Institute of Technology, Duke University, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins University, the University of California at San Francisco, University of Edinburgh in Scotland, University of Illinois, University of Toronto in Canada, University of Virginia and University of Washington. Princeton, Stanford, Michigan, and the University of Pennsylvania are already offering courses online.
