It happened on the Fourth of July in Khost province. The Army says Staff Sergeant Patrick Rogers was a member of a rescue team sent to rescue the soldiers on the side of a cliff.
Rogers is a member of the task force Wolf Pack of the 82nd combat aviation brigade stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Those wounded soldiers were safely lifted into a Blackhawk helicopter. The Army says rescuers faced enemy fire and high winds during the operation.
