Famed League City volunteer firefighter laid to rest

LEAGUE CITY, TX

Family and friends gathered Saturday for the funeral of Art Hewitt. He was a League City volunteer firefighter for 61 years, right up until he passed away at the age of 92.

His dedication made him a local legend, and he was the subject of a Hometown Live feature here on Eyewitness News back in October. His colleagues say he died doing what he loved.

"Art meant the world to us. He was our grandfather, he was our father. He was a consummate firefighter, led us by example for 61 years," said Ray Bigonesse, president of the League City Volunteer Fire Department.

Hewitt fought fires until he was 85 and continued to inspect station gear and teach young firefighters until his death.

League City Fire Station #1 is named for him.
