The Southwest Freeway turned into a crime scene this morning after a body was found slumped over the guard rail.

Several drivers called 911 around 3am when they saw the dead man on the inbound lanes of Highway 59 at Dairy Ashford.

Police are investigating the case as a hit-and-run accident. They're trying to figure out whether the man fell off the back of a vehicle or was hit while trying to cross the road.

"There's no other vehicles around. We hadn't received any other calls asking about him," said Officer Mark Grothaus with the Sugar Land Police Department. "So at this point, we don't have him identified and our traffic unit is investigating the scene."

Police think the victim may be between 30 and 40 years old. A cause of death has not been determined yet.

The police investigation had the freeway shut down for hours. It reopened shortly before 7am.
