New monument in Houston honors fallen officers

The Law Enforcement Memorial Monument was dedicated Saturday at Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery in north Harris County.

The monument is inscribed with the names of 11 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty since 1954 and are buried at the cemetery.

HPD Chief Charles McClelland Jr. and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia were there for the solemn ceremony, alongside the HPD Honor Guard and lawmen from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the Houston Police Officers Union, the Harris County Deputies Organization and officials with The 100 Club.

Fallen officers' family members were also in attendance, including Loynell Smelley. Her husband John Scuttle died in a car crash in 1959.

"This is the fulfillment of a dream to have it up and to have it for all of the officers, not just my husband, who's been dead for 53 years," she said. "So they're gone but they are not forgotten."
