Galveston mayday hoax may be connected to one in NJ

GALVESTON, TX

Last month, an apparent boater in distress called the Coast Guard in Galveston with a mayday message, saying his fishing boat was sinking and people were in danger. That was a hoax.

Last week, a similar call was made to the Coast Guard in New Jersey. In both cases, federal resources were scrambled to look for survivors or wreckage. None was ever found.

Making hoax calls is a federal crime. Wednesday morning, Coast Guard investigators in New York will hold a news conference about the cases, and sources indicate to us they may reveal a link between the two.
