It happened around 1:45am on F.M. 1960 near Mills Road in northwest Harris County.
Investigators say a state trooper saw the driver speeding down F.M. 1960 with his lights off before the crash. According to authorities, the crash happened before the trooper could catch up with him.
The driver was trapped in his car and had to be pried out. LifeFlight transported him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition where he later died.
There were five adults in the SUV. Three women were taken to an area hospital, officials said. At last check, they were all stable.
