Houston native to become Catholic bishop

HOUSTON

Nearly 20 US bishops and 200 local priests are expected at the ordination, the first of its kind in the new Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. As an auxiliary bishop, Bishop-elect Sheltz will assist Cardinal Daniel DiNardo in shepherding 1.2 million Catholics across 10 counties that make up the largest Archdiocese in Texas.

Pope Benedict XVI named Bishop-elect Sheltz as auxiliary bishop on Feb. 21, 2012, filling a role that has been vacant since March 2010.

"I am moved and humbled that His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, would choose me to serve in this capacity, in a place that has always been my home," Bishop-elect Sheltz said. "It has been a profound joy to serve as a parish priest in this Archdiocese. I pray that through my service as bishop, I may be a good preacher of the life of Jesus Christ and continue to grow in faith."
