Power line accident nearly kills two

HOUSTON

It all happened outside of a subdivision on Riata Canyon and Barker Cypress. The two men, both in their fifties, are in the hospital after the flagpole they were installing hit a power line Tuesday morning in the Riata West subdivision.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says the flagpole tipped and hit the lower power line.

Both of the men work for a contractor, not CenterPoint.

When the flagpole hit the power line, witnesses say the power flickered and minutes after that they heard lots of sirens.

"I was outside working on a couple of cars and out of nowhere we hear a big boom and shortly thereafter another big blue -- like a bluish colored flash," said witness Donald Bass.

No word on the men's conditions right now, although I am told one of them was alert, and the other was in and out of consciousness.

CenterPoint investigators were out here although results of that investigation may take some time.

We have heard from Castle Rock, the builder of the subdivision. They are still waiting to hear how the two men are doing, and say it was one of their employees who called 911 when the flagpole hit the power line.
