A suspected drunken driver died early Sunday after crashing into a pole in northwest Houston.

It happened around 5am on the Highway 249 at Willow Chase.

According to Houston police, a car was traveling south on the 249 frontage road when it bumped the left curb. The driver apparently overcorrected and the car slid sideways across the lanes, slamming into a wooden telephone pole on the driver's side.

Police said the driver died at the scene. Two male passengers were transported to area hospitals in serious but stable condition.

Investigators believe the driver may have been intoxicated. They said they found several open containers of alcohol inside the car.
