Members of the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church gathered for a gala in honor of the church's 50th anniversary. The church was founded by Rev. William Lawson in 1962 and served as a staple in the Third Ward community.
"I think that commitment has fueled the church for 50 whole years. And I pray that it fueled the church for the next 50 years and even beyond that," Senior Pastor Rev. Marcus Cosby said.
Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church has more than 10,000 members Incidentally, the church's founder, Rev. William Lawson, is the father of our Live at Five co-anchor Melanie Lawson.
