It happened around 12:30am on 34th Street near Bella Vista.
Police were called out to the scene and found a man in his 20s lying in the street next to his car with a single gunshot wound.
They rushed the victim to Ben Taub General Hospital where he died. His name has not been released.
According to investigators, an unknown male suspect shot the victim and fled the scene in a grey or dark green Chevrolet Impala. The motive is unknown at this time.
