Easter celebrated at 100-year-old Houston church

HOUSTON

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish just east of downtown Houston is turning 100 this year.

The Oblates of Mary Immaculate founded the church and held its first Mass on August 18, 1912 to administer the Sacraments in Spanish to the rapidly growing Mexican and Mexican-American community in the Houston area.

Petra Guillen sells religious articles in front of the church every Sunday. She's been a member of the church for decades.

"We actually came with knowing nobody around here. So they took care of the parish, getting the people introduced and seeing that they got things that they needed," she said Sunday.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish will hold a special event each month this year to celebrate the anniversary.
