Man seriously injured by suspected drunk driver

HOUSTON

The man stopped to change a flat tire on the North Loop near Homestead around 11:45pm Friday. An officer with the Houston Police Department pulled behind him and turned on her overhead lights.

As the officer approached the man to help, a silver Toyota Corolla smashed into the back of her cruiser.

The impact pushed the cruiser into the stranded driver's car. He had been standing between the back of his car and the front of the police car, so he was pinned between the two vehicles. It crushed both his legs and he was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital in serious condition.

The officer was next to her police car and was bumped by it when the crash happened. She was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be checked out, but had no major injuries.

The 26-year-old woman driving the striking car was arrested and charged with intoxication assault.
