Security guard shoots, kills auto theft suspect

HOUSTON

A 25-year-old man is dead after one of those security guards caught him, police believe, trying to steal a pickup truck. It happened around 3:30am Wednesday at the Magnolia Cove apartments in the 100 block of Goodson near Airline in north Houston.

We talked to the man whose pickup was almost stolen about what happened. He didn't want to be identified, but told us he was unaware at the time anyone was trying to steal his vehicle.

Houston police tell us two security guards were on patrol and spotted two suspects they believed were trying to steal the man's pickup. When they tried to stop them, one of the suspects ran, and the other -- John Henry Almanza -- tried to disarm the security guard, so the guard fired his weapon. Almanza, 25, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The truck's owner says he's thankful the guard was there to keep the complex safe.

"I think the security company did their job just trying to keep people safe, the neighborhood safe, and they did their jobs," he said.

Authorities don't believe either of the suspects was armed.

The two security guards were not injured.

The case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury.

The other suspect is still on the loose. Anyone with information on the wanted suspect is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600.
