About 416 homes in the New Caney area are expected to be without power until early Wednesday mornning after a car plowed into a pole during an accident Tuesday evening.

The wreck happened around 6pm on State Highway 242 near Anton Thurlo Lane in the New Caney area.

Authorities say a vehicle traveling in the westbound lanes veered into oncoming traffic, causing a driver heading eastbound to run off the road and hit a pole.

The New Caney Fire Department arrived as the car caught fire but firefighters were unable to do anything about it until the power company arrived on scene to cut 35,000 volts.

The driver wasn't injured in the wreck but the road was close for about an hour and half as HAZMAT crews cleaned the oil from the transformer.

Power crews are now working on replacing the pole and a transformer, but they don't expect power to be restored to those homes until about 4am.
