Car hits electrical tower, affects power at JSC

HOUSTON

The incident happened shortly before 3pm when a pickup truck hit an electrical tower on Space Center Boulevard. The damage forced officials at the Johnson Space Center to shut down its power and operate on a backup power source.

It appears the driver was heading eastbound on Space Center Boulevard when he cut across to the other side, crashed through a fence and into the tower. From SkyEye HD, tire tracks could be seen going across a median and then continue into a field on the opposite side of the road.

It wasn't immediately known what caused the car to hit the tower, but NASA officials say they have not heard of any injuries from the wreck.

Crews are working to set up a temporary structure and hope to have it finished by early Thursday morning. Once it is up, the space center can resume operations on regular power.

Only the space center was affected by the tower's damage.
