Report: Texas 38th, up from last, in homeless kids

DALLAS, TX

Kourtney joined the growing ranks of homeless children in Texas after her mom was laid off from her job last year and the family could no longer afford their Dallas apartment.

An updated study by the National Center on Family Homelessness released Tuesday placed Texas 38th in the nation in how homeless children fare. That's an improvement from the dead last ranking Texas earned in 2009.

Dr. Ellen L. Bassuk is president of the national center that produced the report. She says Texas has created a helpful strategic plan for ending homelessness. But with more than 131,000 homeless children, she says it still has much work to do.
