Man killed by Texas deputy had shot near chopper

ELROY, TX

The Travis County Sheriff's Office on Monday identified the man who died as 31-year-old Joshua Blair Samuelson.

Relatives of Samuelson on Sunday summoned officers to Elroy, about 15 miles southeast of Austin. Family members say Samuelson was threatening to hurt himself and had texted pictures of him with a shotgun.

Sheriff's spokesman Roger Wade says Samuelson came out of a home, confronted two deputies and refused to put down his weapon.

Wade says a tactical officer shot Samuelson after he raised a gun toward a deputy.

The officer who fired, Deputy Carlos Rodriguez, has been put on administrative duty during a department review of the incident.
