Tiniest babies growing up healthy still an exception to the rule

A new medical report says the tiniest babies, some weighing under a pound, still face long odds of merely surviving, and that success stories are the exception, not the rule.

The report from the doctor who resuscitated two of the tiniest ever born says that while both those births turned out to be success stories, they should not raise false hope. It points out that most babies this small do poorly and many do not survive even with advanced medical care.

The report tries to address the question of the real age of viability. It's been hotly debated for many years and there's still no answer.

The report is in today's Pediatrics online.
