Girl, 6, killed in suspected DWI crash

HOUSTON

Police say the driver responsible for the wreck is the dead child's relative -- 25-year-old Jamilet Zuniga, who will be charged with intoxication manslaughter. We are told Zuniga is the girl's aunt.

The crash happened just before midnight Saturday in the 1100 block of North Loop East near the North Freeway.

Police say Zuniga and seven passengers were inside a maroon Ford Explorer traveling west on the North Loop. According to investigators, Zuniga suddenly swerved and skidded across all lanes. The SUV slammed into the inside concrete wall, rolling over and landing on top of the wall.

Six-year-old Blanca Herrera Lopez was ejected from the vehicle and died.

Out of the six remaining passengers, police said five were rushed to Memorial Hermann in unknown condition. At least one of the injured passengers was another young child.

The intersection was closed for nearly four hours while police were on scene.

It is unknown if Zuniga was hospitalized. Intoxication manslaughter charges are pending against her, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation. Please stay with Eyewitness News and abc13.com for more information as it becomes available.
