Man accused of leaving passenger in car to die after crash

HOUSTON

David Cruz, 20, is charged with failure to stop and render aid. According to court documents, Cruz was driving around early Halloween morning with three passengers including victim Anthony Story when he was involved in an accident in the 3800 block of Broadway and the Gulf Freeway. The two surviving passengers told police that Cruz did not stop at the scene and kept driving even though all three passengers were injured and bleeding, and Story was unconscious.

Court documents state Cruz allegedly drove for two miles then stopped his vehicle at an apartment complex in the 7900 block of Bellfort, grabbed four beer cans from the car and took off running to his friend's apartment, leaving the three injured passengers inside the car.

Cruz's friend at the apartment told police that Cruz changed his clothes and told him he had been involved in an accident, but did not call police.

The two surviving passengers told police they had their mom call the Houston Fire Department. Story was transported to Ben Taub Hospital where he died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Bond has been set at $30,000.
