Big rig accident shuts down inbound lanes of Highway 290 for hours

HOUSTON

The accident happened around 2:30am on Highway 290 at Gessner Drive. The Northwest Freeway was closed between W. Little Road and Gessner Drive. TXDOT finally reopened all lanes after 10am.

An HPD sergeant says the big rig, which was carrying a load of vitamin water, lost control and crashed after the driver apparently fell asleep. The cab caught fire. The driver managed to escape the fiery wreck without major injuries.

The trailer was partially burned before it was extinguished. The load of vitamin water that wasn't burned was towed away.

The HOV lanes were open to all passenger vehicles during rush hour. Clean up crews took longer than expected to remove the debris from the roadway.
