South TX man gets 7 1/2 years in gun smuggling case

LAREDO, TX

U.S. Attorney Jose Angel Moreno said 35-year-old Daniel Bustamante of Laredo was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in June to attempting to export firearms.

A complaint filed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms says Bustamante admitted after his January arrest that he was transporting guns and assault rifles to the Rio Grande, where they would be taken into Mexico.

He was captured by Laredo police officers acting on a tip that the driver of a vehicle with license plates corresponding to Bustamante's was transporting the weapons.
