Man guilty of assault in alleged machete death

SAN ANTONIO, TX

Prosecutors say jury selection is scheduled Tuesday in the murder trial of fellow roommate Alexi Estebes-Mejia.

The San Antonio Express-News reports Erlin Yobani Garcia-Rivera reached a plea agreement Friday in his murder case and agreed to plead guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say Garcia-Rivera must testify against Estebes-Mejia, in exchange for a maximum 20-year prison term.

The body of Juan Jose Santana-Hernandez was discovered in 2009 near a San Antonio loading dock. An autopsy found the victim was stabbed and had chopping wounds allegedly caused by a machete.

Investigators say the three men had attended a party together.
