A woman was hospitalized Sunday after nearly drowning in Surfside Beach, officials said. According to the Surfside Police Department, a 49-year-old woman was swimming near the jetties when she was swept underwater.

Her husband was able to pull her ashore, but officials said she appeared to be below the surface for at least two or three minutes.

Emergency responders evaluated her and determined she had a substantial amount of salt water in her lungs.

She was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Her condition was unavailable Sunday night.
