The Taliban say that a British soldier who was reported missing in southern Afghanistan was captured by their fighters and then died in the crossfire during a battle with NATO troops.

The Taliban claim could not be independently confirmed.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousef Ahmadi says the soldier was first captured during a firefight in the Babaji area of Helmand province on Monday. He says the soldier died shortly afterward in the crossfire.

NATO says the coalition has no reports of a gunbattle in Babaji on Monday.

NATO says its soldiers are still searching for the missing British service member.
