Fidel Steadman, 32, was struck by a car early Tuesday morning as he was walking down the Gulf Freeway near Fuqua. He crashed through the windshield of 49-year-old James John Onak's Mazda.
Authorities say Onak kept driving, apparently unaware that Steadman's body was in his passenger seat. A deputy made the discovery when he pulled over Onak for considerable front-end damage to his car.
The Constable's Office says the deputy thought Onak might be under the influence. A mandatory blood draw was taken and now Onak, 49, is charged with one misdemeanor count of DWI, a felony count of failure to stop and render aid, and felony accident involving injury.
An autopsy on Steadman's body was being performed on Tuesday, but those results have not yet been released.
