Waco police say the car went out of control around midnight Thursday and hit a telephone pole, killing a man and a woman.
Police say another man who was in the car ran away. Police early Friday detained a possible suspect. No charges were immediately filed.
Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton says an officer tried to stop the car for a traffic violation when the vehicle sped off. Swanton says the car was being driven at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner so police ended the pursuit. The vehicle then went out of control and struck the pole.
Names of the dead weren't immediately released. Autopsies have been ordered.
