HOUSTON
It happened on the southbound lanes of the frontage road of the Eastex Freeway at Mt. Houston. According to police, a 31-year-old driver was travelling at a high rate of speed and rear-ended an Oldsmobile carrying a 43-year-old male and his 44-year-old wife. The vehicle caught fire and the woman was pulled from the wreckage but died at the scene.
Both drivers were transported to Ben Taub Hospital. Their conditions are not known at this time.
Police say the SUV driver will face intoxication manslaughter charges when he is released from the hospital.
All three lanes of the frontage road were closed for hours, causing major delays during rush hour.
