EPA to retest school's air for toxins

HOUSTON The EPA announced Tuesday it plans to resample the air at San Jacinto Elementary School in Deer Park, after sampling between Sept. 4, 2009 and Jan. 10, 2010 raised concerns about "long-term, continuous" exposure to butadiene.

Butadiene is an industrial chemical. No other chemicals were found to be above levels of concern.

Some studies have found that long-term exposure to the chemical could increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and possibly some cancers.

The elementary school is near a large petrochemical plant. The EPA believes conditions at a nearby middle school would be the same.
