Sr. Cpl. Norm Smith was fatally shot while trying to serve a warrant on someone else at the residence.
Deliberations began late Wednesday after Payne testified that he did not know police were at his door when he opened fire, thinking he was being robbed. Payne, who could get the death penalty if convicted, called 911 after the shooting.
Prosecutors say Payne knew that Smith was a police officer.
Jurors also deliberated Thursday.
