Police said wrecker driver Samuel Martin Holsome, 32, was repossessing a Dodge pickup at an apartment complex when the owner saw the wrecker and ran to the parking lot.
The 51-year-old owner told police he thought his vehicle was being stolen. He fired a shotgun at the vehicle as Holsome was towing it away.
Holsome was struck in the right shoulder when the ammunition broke through the back windshield of his wrecker, investigators said.
According to police, he towed the pickup down Gessner and jumped the median at Westheimer, pulling into a gas station for help.
Police arrived and Holsome was transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest. He was in good condition Friday afternoon, expected to be released.
Officials said the case is being referred to a grand jury to determine if any charges will be filed.
