Lubbock plaza dedicated to Buddy Holly, wife

LUBBOCK, TX The plaza named for Holly and his widow also includes a life-size, bronze statue of the famed rock and roller.

Holly, a Lubbock native, died at the age of 22 in a 1959 plane crash.

Maria Elena Holly tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that she can foresee families celebrating birthdays and weddings the plaza.

Travis Holley, the late Buddy Holly's older brother, says, "I think this is absolutely beautiful. I think the city has gone above and beyond."

Randy Truesdell, director of the city's parks and recreation department, says the plaza includes drought-tolerant landscaping and a lighting design that makes the Holly statue visible from Interstate 27.
