The victim, who family members identified as 16-year-old Lionel Smith, and a friend had gone to an area convenience store and were walking back when they were approached by two or three men in a silver sedan.
According to Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators, two Latino men exited the vehicle and approached the victim and his friend.
Smith was shot along the side the roadway and he died at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing. Deputies do not know the motive for the shooting and no suspect information was available Sunday.
Smith was a junior at Channelview High School.
