Area soldier dies in non-combat Afghan incident

Friends wrote condolensces on Spauldin's Facebook profile Friday and Saturday as they learned of his death. He was 21.

The Defense Department says a 21-year-old Central Texas soldier has died of injuries suffered in a non-combat-related incident in Afghanistan.

A Pentagon statement issued Saturday says Spc. Riley S. Spaulding of Sheridan died Wednesday in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan. The statement provided no other details. Sheridan is about 70 miles west of Houston.

Spaulding was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.
