How a government shutdown would affect Houstonians

HOUSTON If the shutdown goes on more than a week, the April 29 launch date of the space shuttle Endeavour will likely be delayed. Also delayed would be the paychecks for those fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Texas families with loved ones there would have to wait for the pentagon to get funding before they get back pay.

But probably the biggest effect of the shutdown is tax returns. The IRS won't be able to process paper returns and refund checks would be delayed.

What won't be affected by the shut down is mail services, Medicare, Social Security and veterans health services and benefits.
